Uzbekistan Tour

April 26 - May 10, 2009

with David, Anna, and Sheikh Bukhari

Uzbekistan Mosque

Uzbekistan is a unique living example of the architecture and culture of the Central Asian silk road, and the sites and atmosphere are unusual in that they have not deteriorated or been destroyed over time, unlike many other historical regions. The places we will visit, Tashkent, Bukhara, Samarkand and the Ferghana Valley conjure up images of traveling in ancient times to the East for spices and silk, the feeling of mystery and of a different world, a crossroads for nomadic peoples of Asian descent meeting brave merchants traveling from Europe, one of the original places where East and West met.   It is the home of the Khwajagan, the ancient spiritual guardians of the wisdom of the vast Central Asian steppe.  We will see hidden tombs, old synagogues, mosques, and a Zoroastrian temple; there will be spiritual gatherings where one can go by invitation only, and closed architectural sites that our guide will enable us to enter.  Yet above all, the greatest asset of Uzbekistan is the people who are friendly, quick witted and deeply grateful to have foreign guests.  And… Uzbekistan has some of the best shopping in the world.
